You never know who you'll meet...
One of the best things about producing and co-hosting the show, is all the amazing people I've met. After meeting David Hemmings, our first guest, he and I discovered a mutual love of history, and in particular, the history surrounding the War of 1812. It turned out that part of David's current research project intersected with the research I was doing on my family tree. So, we decided to visit The Haldimand County Museum and Archives together one Saturday to go through their records.
When we arrived we met Karen Richardson, the curator. She was very interested in hearing about our projects and went on to tell us about hers: Karen had been researching the women Loyalists who came to Canada after the American Revolution. She was particularly interested in the tales of the Women and Children who walked, often with Native guides, from upstate New York to what was then Newark, Ontario. One such woman was Catherine Young, who walked to Newark with four other women and 31 children - a story I was very familiar with.
I asked Karen if she would be interested in being a guest on the show and talking about this subject.
She was thrilled to do it and we made plans.
Meanwhile, David was busy running a program on his computer which produced some interesting information: Karen and I are 7th cousins, both descendants of Sgt. Daniel Young. Small world indeed!
The day we filmed this episode, we needn't have worried about running out of things to talk about. In fact, once we got going, it was really hard to stop! Feel free to contact Karen Richardson (tell her I said hi) at the museum, or better yet, drop in for a visit!
