Season Two - First Episode - We are Not Zebras.
Our first guest this season was Dragana Skokovec-Sunjic. Dragana is a Pharmacist.
We invited Dragana on the show to talk about a very important issue in most of our lives...Stress! Most of us have it, and few of us really know what to do about it.
I always knew stress was a bad thing, but I never really thought about exactly what it could do to your body. Dragana referred to a book by Robert M. Sopolsky called "Why Zebra's Don't Get Ulcers". She used the idea of a Zebra reacting to a lion or tiger suddenly giving chase to him, and the amazing changes that happen to his body immediately that this "stress" hits. These chemical changes in the body are all designed to get the Zebra moving fast, and out of harm's way! She explained that when something happens that stresses us, our bodies react the same way as the Zebra's...but because we are not actually running for our lives, these same chemical changes that saved the Zebra, have no where to go in our bodies, and end up manifesting themselves in lots of bad ways... high blood pressure, heart attack, or stroke.
We also talked about the importance of having good bacteria in your system, and how you can get that back if you haven't been able to maintain it. Probiotic supplements are one thing that can help.
